COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This presentation will provide an overview of the history of trauma

treatment in clinical settings and articulate the challenges of treating

racial discrimination and the traditional trauma framework. Finally,

strategies for effective assessment and treatment of racial

trauma and race-based traumatic stress are discussed.


EDUCATIONAL GOALS AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Define racial trauma in the context of mental health assessment and treatment.
  2. Identify at least three mental and physical health symptoms correlated with significant experiences of racial discrimination.
  3. Identify at least two clinical assessments that can facilitate recognition and treatment of racial trauma.


OUTLINE:

  • Introduction of topic and speaker
  • Overview of history of trauma treatment/Definition of trauma
  • Discuss challenges of treating racial discrimination and traditional trauma framework
  • Discuss strategies for effective assessment and treatment of racial trauma and race-based traumatic stress


PRESENTER:  DR. MARYAM JERNIGAN-NOESI

Dr. Jernigan-Noesi is a licensed psychologist, professor, clinician-scientist,

and CEO of Jernigan and Associates Psychological and Educational

Consulting, LLC. She currently lives in Atlanta, GA, and serves as Assistant

Professor of Psychology at Agnes Scott College in Decatur. In addition, she

holds an appointment as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of

Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine. Her contributions as a

scholar & researcher have earned recognition for growing expertise in racial

stress and trauma and the investigation of experiences of racial discrimination

as a social determinant of mental and physical health outcomes. As such, 

she has served as a consultant to numerous organizations and educational

institutions around issues related to racial equity and inclusion.


CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS:

This course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s and LEP’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

EAST Bay CAMFT is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFT’S, LCSW’S, LPCC’S and LEP’S. EB CAMFT maintains responsibility for the program and all of its contents.

Will be awarded after the completion of the workshop to those who attend the workshop in its entirety, complete the course evaluation form, and pass any required post test with a score of 70% or higher (if a test is required).


**IMPORTANT REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY**  

You may cancel for a 50% refund between 5 and 15 days in advance of the event. No refunds for cancellations within 5 days of the event or for no-shows or failure to attend due to emergencies.  Unused funds cannot be applied to future events. NO EXCEPTIONS.  If the event is cancelled for any reason, you will receive a full refund.
